What not to put in the dishwasher: what can and cannot be washed in the dishwasher. A complete guide to make no mistake.
There dishwasher is one of the most used appliances and… most appreciated by Italians! On the other hand, once you have experienced its comfort, it is very difficult to go back: who would most want to wash dishes, pots and cutlery for less, given and considering that there is someone who could do it for us ?!
What cannot be washed in the dishwasher
Well, despite the great utility and reliability that modern dishwashers can provide us, many people make gross mistakes in their management, ending up putting in this domestic appliances items that should not undergo such washing. But what are they? What not to put in the dishwasher so as not to damage the appliance and the objects in its basket?
Can crystal glasses go in the dishwasher?
First of all, we advise you not to put in the dishwasher all those objects that could get damaged following the thorough washing of this appliance. Crystal objects with delicate and refined decorations in fact, they could have the worst if exposed to hot water and detergents, together with the powerful jets with which the dishwasher usually degreases every dish.
If you really don't want to wash them by hand, at least take care to proceed with short washes at low temperatures, using mildly aggressive detergents and placing the pieces in the basket in such a way that the risk of injury is minimal.
Can professional knives go in the dishwasher?
A second class of objects that we advise you not to wash in the dishwasher is represented by knives who have a lama particularly sharp. These knives, generally related to professional use, in fact require one specific and particular care: on the other hand, routine use of the dishwasher can promote oxidation by making the blade less sharp.
It is therefore better to wash them by hand, with the help of a sponge and, possibly, mildly aggressive detergents.
Can wooden ladles and cutting boards go in the dishwasher?
Also ladles is wooden cutting boards they should not be washed in the dishwasher currently. In this case, the risk is in fact that the excessive absorption of water deforms the wood, or discolours it in a short time.
So if you want to extend the life of your parents wooden objects, it is advisable to proceed with a separate washing, avoiding high temperatures and prolonged soaking. And if these elements are affected by a rather persistent dirt, you can wash them gently with a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda, and then leave them to dry outdoors.
Can non-stick cookware go in the dishwasher?
Similar cautions should be replicated against non-stick cookware, characterized by the presence of a particular material (il teflon) which prevents food from sticking to the surface. However, remember that putting the non-stick cookware can compromise its functionality, considering that washing in this appliance can favor the bottom lesion.
Of course, the above does not mean that non-stick pans cannot be washed in the dishwasher: in doing so, however, you will accelerate their wear. It is therefore better to clean them with a non-abrasive sponge, hot water and mild detergent.
Can ceramic knives and utensils go in the dishwasher?
Finally, we want to share some specific attention about the possibility of not putting the ceramic utensils, which inside the compartment could have the worst. Therefore, if you are dealing with porcelain ceramics or some antique decorated service, it is better to proceed with a hand wash with hot water and non-aggressive detergent. Less cautions can be placed on terracotta ceramics, which are more resistant and therefore able to withstand even the most intense cycles.
Wash the stone in the dishwasher
More and more widespread in Italian kitchens, in a clear vintage reference that does not fail to enrich the ranks of many fans, are the pots and i ladles made of stone. Also in this case, considering that we are talking about a very porous material, it is better to avoid placing them in the dishwasher, since excessively hot water could be corrosive.
However, it will be possible to guarantee them the correct cleaning by leaving them to soak in warm water for at least 30 minutes, and then proceeding to eliminate any food residues with the aid of an abrasive sponge.
