WEEE disposal: how it works and what the law says. Here is a guide that will explain how to behave to manage waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
THE WEEE We Italians produce an infinity of products every day: televisions, food processors, toasters, clocks, refrigerators, washing machines, batteries, light bulbs, modems, notebooks ... and many other appliances that have now reached the end of their life cycle.
The production of WEEE, between 2014 and 2015, saw an increase - only in Italy - of 4,3%. This percentage is set to increase. The era ofconsumerismhas given way towaste company. The user, therefore, does not have time to "consume" an appliance (smartphone, tablet, multimedia player ...) that this is already destined for waste due to a phenomenon ofplanned obsolescenceor simply as a matter offashion.
WEEE categories and classification
THE WEEEcan be divided into 5 categories:
- R1, referring to waste from electrical equipment such as refrigerators and air conditioners. R1 = Cold and climate.
- R2, other Great Whites like washing machines, dryers and dishwashers.
- R2, are electronic waste such as TVs and monitors.
- R4, represent the waste from the most common electronic equipment, that is to say small appliances, audio systems and consumer electronics (smartphones, multimedia players, tablets…).
- R5, bulbs of all kinds and other light sources.
For the correctdisposal of WEEEthis waste must be delivered to the municipal ecological islands. If it comes toBulky weeelike the great whites or iWEEEof category R1, it will be necessary to request the home collection offered free of charge in many Italian cities. If soWEEE disposalis linked to the purchase of a new appliance, bring the old one directly to the shopkeeper who will dispose of it completely free of charge.
Even the toys to be thrown away may not have to end up in the undifferentiated. How to understand if a toy goes undifferentiated or with itWEEE disposal?
Look at the object or its packaging, if it has the classic logo of a rubbish bin crossed out with an X, it cannot end up in the dry undifferentiated but must be conferred with the othersWEEE. Most of the radio-controlled toys or toys with electrical components must be disposed of with WEEE.
WEEE, legislation: what the law says
With the law decree in force since 22 July 2016 (legislation 121/2016), the formula of One against zero can be applied to all electrical and electronic equipment, includingWEEEno longer functional as long as they have a maximum external size of 25 cm. This law, therefore, applies to small appliances such as:
- Kitchen robot
- Electric shavers
Small appliances can bedelivered free of chargeat points of sale with an area greater than 400 square meters. These shops, in fact, have the obligation todispose of for freesmall appliances and the consumer is not bound to buy new ones.
Sullodisposal of large household appliances, on the other hand, the One Against One decree (D.L. 65/2010) is active. Therelegislation on the disposal of large household appliancesensures that the withdrawal of the old appliance to be disposed of can be free only in the event of the purchase of a new equivalent appliance. To give a concrete example, you can request the free collection and disposal of your old refrigerator only from the shop where you are buying a new refrigerator. If you want to dispose of a refrigerator without buying a new one, you will have to arrange for it to be disposed of at the ecological island responsible for the WEEE disposal of your local area as explained below.
WEEE disposal, what not to do
Do not beat the electronic waste in the dustbin, absolutely not to be collected with undifferentiated collection. All too often dry is destined for ecological monsters called incinerators or waste-to-energy plants.
Avoid massingelectronic wastein the cellar or in the attic. You would end up taking up only valuable space by postponingto posteritythe problem. In addition, in the event of humidity, rising temperatures and incorrect storage, the WEEE could alter and not benefit the home environment.
Do not mix theweeewith other non-electronic waste.
WEEE disposal, what to do
Bring the WEEE to the municipal ecological islands or conferred iweeein authorized collection centers. To find out the nearest WEEE collection point, visit the remediapervoi.it portal underWEEE Eco-Pitches Search.
Request home collection of theWEEEbulky like the Great Whites (washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers…).
When buying a new appliance, give the old one to the dealer. The store is required by law to accept it even if it is no longer functional. The current legislation requires the point of sale to provide for the correctWEEE disposal.
Compulsory consortia for the disposal of WEEE
Reference points of the WEEE disposal areCompulsory consortia. Which consortium to contact? It depends onWEEE that to be disposed of.
For example,Ecodomis the largest Italian Consortium for the recovery and recycling of household appliances. It also deals with waste from batteries and accumulators and is made up of the main manufacturers of large appliances, including hoods and water heaters.
Ecolight, active since 2004, collects batteries and accumulators. EcoLamp, as the name might suggest, collects and recycles lighting equipment.
WEEE disposal in the company: professional WEEE
The correct management and disposal of waste generated by the activity of a company could follow a chain similar to that seen for the individual citizen, but this depends on the size of the professional activity and the volume of WEEE produced by the company. To manage the collection of WEEE produced in a company there are many companies that dispose of company WEEE by carrying out all regulatory obligations, with the issue of a waste identification form, a waste loading and unloading register and MUD ( where required).
