Epoxy powders, used for painting some surfaces. They can be toxic, so take the proper precautions, but they also have many benefits. You may not know the name but do not be surprised if you have used them yourself or seen others use them. Powder coating is a process often used to coat metal type surfaces which are covered with an organic film, both for decorative and protective purposes, to prevent them from corroding or being damaged by aggressive agents.

Epoxy powders

When using a paint based on epoxy powders, the surfaces are covered with a substance that adheres by electrostatic effect. It then needs a pass in an oven so that the temperature melts the paint and thus polymerizes it the layer adheres better.

On an industrial level paints with epoxy powders are used a lot because they are easy to apply and, at the same time, give excellent results, plus also from an ecological point of view, they have advantages because they avoid the use of solvents.

If they are not applied well, peeling, bubble formation and cracks may appear, the materials that can best be treated with this type of paint are steel, aluminum, galvanized metals, MDF medium-density fibreboard (a panel derived from wood) and glass.

Epoxy powders: what they are

Powder coating makes use of various types of powders but among the first we find epoxies. The properties of these powders mean that they must be applied with appropriate electrostatic guns.

These tools positively charge the powder and they "throw" it on the surface to be treated which attracts and holds it because it has a negative charge. At the end of the gun application, a passage in the oven, for firing it is time to fix the paint in epoxy powder.

Epoxy powders in paints

Epoxy powders are known for their use in paints, especially when it comes to having to treating artifacts intended for the interior. These paints make the surface very resistant to chemicals, they even have one excellent mechanical and chemical resistance, are not subject to corrosion, they last over time and resist shocks. Epoxy powder paints do not cost much and if applied well, they also give a pleasant result to the eyes.

To use in a "massive" way epoxy powder paints you need a real equipped system that we can find in companies that have to carry out this type of treatment every day. Therefore, a conveyor belt chain plane where to hang the various pieces to be painted, a washing system, a polymerization oven and booths where with electrostatic guns epoxy powder paint is applied. You can usually choose from all shades of color, including metallic colors.

Epoxy powders: toxicity

The epoxy powders such as polyesters, vinyl esters, polyurethanes, have very high toxicity and may potentially contain carcinogens. They can create problems with contact alone, or if inhaled or ingested.

Those who often use this type of substances run the risk of becoming hypersensitive and develop skin allergies, even violent ones. You never know and before finding yourself having to run for repairs in pain or suffering, it is better to use protective equipment such as gloves and masks, remembering to ventilate the rooms where the painting takes place.

Epoxy or polyester powders

There are also paints a polyester powder and are usually known for their resistance to chemicals and atmospheric agents. Unlike epoxy powders, they are used and preferred for products intended for outdoor use also because they resist UV rays, atmospheric agents and chemicals well.

They are hardy and they give no evidence of chalking. In practice, we find them applied to agricultural machinery, mopeds, car accessories and road signs.
