When to plant daffodils?

Thenarcissusit is a spring flowering bulb, so it should be planted in the garden in autumn. With thecultivation of the narcissusin pots we can "trick" the bulbs and get onewinter flowering. With pot cultivation, you canplant the narcissus in potsfrom October to January, even if canonically it should be planted in autumn.

How to plant narcissus in pots

First, make sure you have firm and undamaged bulbs. Choose a pot with dimensions of 20 cm in diameter and 30 cm in depth. Fill the pot with a mixture of soil and peat. In each pot (of the indicated size) you can plant 3 or 4 bulbs, leaving out the upper part of the bulb which will be covered with some mulch of sawdust or dry leaves.

Winter flowering narcissus

To anticipate theflowering of daffodils, momentarily move thejarin a dark and cool place. Ideally, you should keep the jar, for just under a month, in a place with a temperature between 2 and 8 ° C. You can also put the jar in the refrigerator but it must be away from fruit and vegetables which, by releasing ethylene, would damage the bulbs.

After almost a month of cold (so if you start between the end of October and the beginning of November, you will have flowering daffodils for Christmas! If you do it at the end of November, you will have flowering daffodils around January….) Bring the vase indoors! How to know when it's time to move idaffodils in the house? When the sprouts produced by the bulbs have reached a length of about 5 - 6 cm and you will see thin white roots sprouting from the drainage holes of the pot. At this point, you can place the pot in a bright area (exposure to light should be done gradually, so pass it first in a less bright place in the house and then take it to the brightest area of the house). The temperature should be between 15 and 18 ° C (no more!). Leave the narcissus in these conditions (medium intensity light and temperature between 15 and 18 ° C) for 7 - 10 days.

After this period of "adaptation", thepotted narcissusit can be moved indoors, near a window (very bright place) and with temperatures around 20 ° C (spring temperatures). In this way, thenarcissus will begin floweringin a few days.

This is a very useful strategy (and widely used in nurseries) to trigger, in an early way, theflowering in daffodils!
