"Respect for animals" is the name of the new subject that will be implemented in schools in Aragon, Spain, as part of the "Animal World" program.
The Department of Education, Culture and Sports made the proposal so that students stop seeing pets as entertainment objects, which can be discarded or mistreated.
The contents related to animals will be according to the age of each child. One of the issues to be addressed by the youngest, for example, will be "urban fauna in the social environment."
The main idea of this new subject is to raise awareness about the responsible care and ownership of pets, promote respect for animals, encourage empathy towards them and learn to respect their rights.
