L'plaster it is a fundamental element for all houses and, in a certain sense, it is also one of the elements that has undergone the greatest transformations throughout history.

Not everyone remembers, for example, that since ancient times primitive man used mud as plaster to be able to build their own rough houses. More recently, "modern" plaster was refined by the Egyptians 4,000 years ago, using gypsum to create a rudimentary form of plaster that, however, still survives today. Even the Greeks in 500 BC they were known for the use of plaster.

In subsequent years, various materials were used as plaster, appreciated for its sanitary effect (mainly due to the lime content in the components that were used to make it), for its resistance to fire and, in modern times, before the rise of drywall, for its capacity to cover the internal walls of the houses.

Well, over the decades a new form of plaster has appeared in the world of construction: insulating plaster and thermal insulating plaster. But with what characteristics? What benefits?

What is plaster

Although you can find many plaster manufacturers, each with its different applications, and each with its own product, basically everyone follows the same Fundamental "recipe": a base (lime or gypsum) that is mixed with sand, water and often a fiber (known as a binder) or a bit of other material that aims to speed up drying, thus obtaining a lime-based plaster.

Other basic natural additives, such as powdered marble, are sometimes added to create a harder, smoother finish that can be easily polished with a trowel. Until the early 1900s, most plasters were composed exactly like this, based on lime. However, over the course of the 20th century, plaster became the preferred choice. And the reason was simple: the gypsum-based plaster dried in weeks, unlike the lime-based one, which could take up to a year!

What is thermal insulating plaster

As we had the opportunity to anticipate in the preceding lines, plaster is an element that has undergone an interesting evolution over the years, so much so that it has been developed with different technological applications that have then led to its current availability on the market.

In many cases, i rudiments of plastering they haven't changed. The same lime-based gypsum is still in use today, with some evident differences favored by the technology and innovations that have been applied to this sector over the years.

In particular, more and more of special fibers, also wood-based, to replace less efficient "ingredients". The chemical and mineral additives then helped to further refine the modern gypsum, to the point of allowing the launch of a thermal insulating plaster.

L'thermal insulating plaster it is, in some ways, one of the most interesting modern plaster models. Made with lime or gypsum, it contains special ingredients that modify a main feature of traditional plaster: the insulating factor.

Traditional plaster insulates the wall rather little, therefore not being particularly suitable for creating a thermal insulating effect. This is especially true for gypsum-based plasters, which cannot be plastered on the surface of the wall itself, but must be further treated with different plastering systems.

The result is that, especially in older homes, there is often little or no insulation in the walls, and traditional gypsum-based plaster can do little to contain the thermal insulation.

Hence, the interesting step forward made with the applications of thermal insulating plaster. But how does it work?

How thermal insulation plaster works

Regardless of whether it is based on lime you hate plaster, all heat-insulating plasters will help homeowners save some money for heating and for the house cooling.

Thanks to special ingredients contained within the plaster - which vary depending on the manufacturer - the insulating plaster is in fact designed to block thermal transfers, while allowing the transmission of moisture. This means that the heat-insulating plaster helps to keep the air warm both indoors and outdoors, depending on the season, while still allowing the house to breathe and the humidity to flow in and out. The result is a plaster that is up to 70% more energy efficient than normal plaster.

In many cases, the heat-insulating plaster uses additive ingredients to obtain an insulating power, such as occurs with perlite and vermiculite. Other producers may have a more natural ingredient, the result of long research work: among these, cork and hemp show promising results, and are favored by many producers and users precisely because they are "green" and sustainable. from an environmental point of view.

In short, the'plaster heat-insulating it can actually represent a fundamental investment to make your apartment more comfortable and more energy efficient.

The higher cost of the most recent and innovative thermal insulating plasters are amply rewarded by the reduction in the cost of bills in the months and years to come, considering that there are many differences in terms of energy consumption that can be appreciated in the short to medium term.
